Himesh Patel has boarded Ryan Coogler’s upcoming “X-Files” reboot, TheWrap has learned.
Patel will star opposite Danielle Deadwyler, who has been attached to the pilot since it got the greenlight at Hulu in February. The actors reunite after both starring in “Station Eleven.”
Patel and Deadwyler will star as two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena, per the official logline.
The project hails from Coogler, who will write, direct and executive produce via his production company, Proximity Media, while Jennifer Yale has been tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer.
Also attached to executive produce are Proximity Media’s Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler and original series creator Chris Carter, with Proximity’s Simone Harris serving as a co-executive producer. Proximity Media’s director of development Dezi Gallegos will also help to oversee the pilot. 20th Television produces the reboot for Hulu’s Onyx Collective.
Patel’s TV career has included British soap “EastEnders,” “Damned,” “Avenue 5,” “The Luminaries,” “Black Mirror,” “The Franchise” and, more recently, “Bait.”
His film credits include “Yesterday,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Tenet,” “Good Grief,” “The Assessment,” “Greedy People” and “Bubble & Speak,” among others.
The sci-fi series, which starred Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi and more, originally ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. Carter, Anderson and Duchovny all returned for two additional seasons that aired in 2016 and 2018, as well as two feature films in 1998 and 2008.

Gillian Anderson Endorses Ryan Coogler’s ‘X-Files’ Reboot Amid Fan Speculation: ‘Give It a Chance’
Gillian Anderson promises that Ryan Coogler’s reboot of “The X-Files” will be worth fans’ time.
While talking at Awesome Con, Anderson gushed about the “Sinners” director’s work on the new “X-Files” project. While the new show stars Danielle Deadwyler, talks between Coogler and the “X-Files” alum have happened and Anderson has seen a glimpse of what the plans are.
“We’ve had a few conversations,” Anderson said. “He’s such a cool guy, and so talented. And the pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f–king cool. It really is.”
Anderson starred as Agent Dana Scully opposite David Duchovney’s Fox Mulder – two FBI agents who investigate the weird corners of the United States, from alien conspiracies to monsters to experiments gone wrong. She returned to the role once already back during the 2016 revival and seems open to another go at her most iconic role.
Last year, Coogler explained his own excitement about getting the reboot off the ground while talking with the Last Podcast on the Left podcast. Coogler – who is already set to write and direct the pilot – wants to bring the scares back to the show.
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f–king scary,” Coogler said. “We’re gonna try to make something really great, and really be something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans, and maybe find some new ones.”
Back in February 2024, “X-Files” creator Chris Carter gave Coogler his blessing to move forward with the series, noting that he won’t be involved with it but will be its “cheerleader.”
“They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing,” Carter told TheWrap.

Jonathan Scott Gets Candid About ‘Really Hard’ Time After Zooey Deschanel's Family Loss
Jonathan and Drew Scott debuted their latest HGTV series, Property Brothers: Under Pressure, on March 15.
In a joint March 2026 interview with Extra TV, Drew and Jonathan shared that the show features affordable housing solutions.
"We're in a housing crisis. A lot of people across America, they can't afford to live where they work. We didn't take on massive budgets this season. We took smaller budgets for people who truly needed the help because they didn't see any way to get what they needed," explained Drew during the Extra TV interview.
He also explained that while "every episode is a different story," each one is "very heartwarming," including an episode wherein the Scott brothers helped a couple who faced hardship because of the Los Angeles fires in January 2025.
Jonathan noted that his fiancée, singer and actressZooey Deschanel, also experienced loss during the L.A. fires.
"Zooey's family's home of 42 years burned in the fires and her parents lost every memory they had, every single thing," said Jonathan in the interview. "They literally didn't even have clothes when they left the house. And so it was really hard for us and emotional."
He also shared that he is "rebuilding" his future in-laws, Mary Jo and Caleb Deschanel's beloved home.
"I'm excited, you know, and they're fortunate, they have a builder in the family," said Jonathan, who has been in a relationship with Deschanel since 2019.
Zooey Deschanel Revealed the News About Her Family Home in a January 2025 Instagram Upload
Deschanel let her fans know that her parents' home was lost to the L.A. fires in a January 2025 Instagram upload. The post featured several photos of the Palisades property.
In the caption of the post, Deschanel described her "childhood home" as "a marvel of 1920s Spanish revival architecture."
"Full of too many incredible memories to count, it was one of the oldest homes in the Palisades and so spectacularly beautiful. It was not a mansion but it was cozy and lovely and unique and perfect to me," said Deschanel in the caption.
She also shared that her family, which includes her sister, fellow actress Emily Deschanel, viewed the home as "a sanctuary where [they] felt most safe."
