Indian citizens in Iran have been advised to leave the country amid fears of a US attack. The advisory will apply to all Indian students, pilgrims, businessmen and tourists currently in Iran.

The January 14 directive is being reiterated, urging all Indian citizens and people of Indian origin to exercise utmost caution.

The warning advised Indian citizens in the country to "leave Iran by any available means of transport, including commercial flights."

The Indian Embassy in Iran has issued a warning to avoid areas of protests or gatherings.

Indian citizens have also been requested to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and monitor local media.

You are advised to keep necessary travel documents, including passports and identity cards, close at hand at all times.

Fresh protests have erupted in Iran since Saturday, following 40 days of mourning for those killed in anti-government protests in January. Students are protesting at universities in the capital Tehran and the city of Mashhad.

Video footage showed a large crowd chanting anti-government slogans.

The situation remains fragile as US-Iran talks on the nuclear deal are scheduled to begin in Geneva on Thursday. The Trump administration has increased its deployment of military aircraft, troops and ammunition to the Middle East. Flight tracking data shows that military equipment is continuing to arrive in the region.
