Not winning the Nobel Peace Prize means I'm no longer forced to think only about peace: Trump

In a letter to Norway's prime minister, US President Donald Trump said he no longer felt compelled to "only think about peace" because he had not been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, while also reiterating his desire to take control of Greenland.

Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on European countries that oppose the US's initiative to take control of Greenland. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gaard Storr and Finnish President Alexander Stubbs objected to this. Trump sent the letter to the Norwegian Prime Minister in response.

In the letter, Trump wrote, "Despite stopping more than eight wars, your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize. So I am no longer forced to think only about peace. Although that (peace) will always take precedence. Now I can think about what is good and right for the United States."

Trump has been actively pursuing the acquisition of Greenland from the European country of Denmark for some time now. He has threatened to impose additional tariffs as punishment if any country obstructs this path. In light of Trump's threat, the European Union (EU) is considering taking countermeasures against the United States.

Even though he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025, the medal ultimately went to Trump. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize this year, presented the medal to Trump on Thursday. Although Trump was happy about it, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has stated that even if the Nobel Prize is awarded to someone, the prize will remain in the name of the winner.

In a message to the Norwegian Prime Minister, Trump reiterated his old claim that Denmark cannot protect Greenland from Russia and China. He also questioned why Denmark still has the right to own Greenland. He said that the large island is not safe until Greenland is owned by the United States.

Denmark is a member of the Western military alliance NATO. According to the alliance agreement, if a member country is attacked, other member countries will come to its defense. European leaders are upset that Trump has instead focused on occupying Greenland. Many analysts believe that such a situation could lead to the collapse of NATO.
